J & H Dinettes & Upholstery Inc. is the only dinette store that makes and upholsters furniture in the area. Clients come from as far away as Florida to have such specialty items as kitchen booths custom-made, says Jason Maldonado, whose father founded the shop in 1969.

“Here we can take care of anything.” Maldonado says. “We can fix, repair and custom make any kind of furniture. We have a tremendous repeat business.”

Breakfast nooks are one of their most popular items. Jason goes to the customer’s home to take measurements and to help the homeowner design a corner booth. One customer visiting his son in New Jersey came to the shop to have a nook designed for his home in Florida. Jason says the gentleman loaded it up and drove it all the way back home to Florida.  Breakfast nooks are our “niche” in the business.

“I love doing the booths.  People come in with their ideas and photographs and we design it together.”

We also build custom booths for restaurants.  It is not uncommon for Jason to travel to New York, Pennsylvania, or Maryland for commercial jobs.  Some of the restaurants we work with are Smith’s, Latitude’s, Ciro’s, TGIFridays, and Ruby Tuesday, all of New York.  The Boards in Asbury Park, Metropolitan Café, Nona’s Italian Cuchina and the Market Yard Grille.  We also work with major hotel chains like Holiday Inn and Ramada Inn.

J & H makes custom furniture, as well.  Jason has made chairs and beds for handicapped people as well as tables that will easily accommodate a wheelchair.  He makes custom furniture for Doctors’ offices that require special certifications.  Sometimes you just can’t find the right size sofa in the right fabric.  We can custom make it.  No job is too big or too small.

Decorators will come to him with their ideas and Jason can help them realize those concepts for their customers.

Three floors house the showrooms and furniture and upholstery shops. Besides custom-made furniture, the shop also carries brand-name, factory-made furniture. The biggest trend Jason sees in furniture is in the use of glass and wrought iron.

“There’s a lot of hi-tech furniture: chairs in different colors, hand-painted glass.”

Other popular items in home furnishings are stone top and metal top tables. These materials are great for the people that are leary of glass, Jason says. Maple is the most popular wood at the moment, he adds.
